May 15. Looking forward to hot water, a change of underwear and properly clearing my ears and nose of sunscreen. We descend but I’m still tired. Taking longer to descend than we did to climb we arrive in BC. The ice fall has changed significantly. Next time you have a bowl of popcorn look at how each piece is held in place by the other. Notice the voids between the pieces. Some caverns lead deep into the middle of the bowl. Move one and more often than not the others shift and tumble. Scale up each piece to being the size and weight of a two story block of flats and you can begin to appreciate the ice fall during our descent. Awesomely beautiful yet deadly at the same time. Maybe the second part is why it is so beautiful......... I remember something about the eye of the beholder ? Rabin meets us with a cold Coke on the glacier back to BC. I love that man! We arrive back to hugs all round. First stop the medical center. I remain in the same clothes thinking you can examine me as I am. Haaaaaaaa sometimes irrational thought is so satisfying even if it is unfair on other people. I stink. After 20 minutes in the BCER it is clear to the doctor I am showing a number of symptoms of HACE. Shit maybe I should have washed and changed. He might have been nicer to me. Look up HACE if interested but to me two choices are clear. 1) wait to see if symptoms disappear and ascend again using medication, monitoring wether they reappear. 2) don’t go back up at this time. Note: there is a high possibility of reoccurrence. Now I admit I’m usually a slow learner but today I have been blessed with an epiphany. The answer is no. I choose a margin of error that maybe greater than others choose but one that I am comfortable with. Time to sleep as tomorrow is another day.
