Led by Lama Tenjee, yesterday was our first trip into the Khumbu ice fall. Rising approx 650 meters above base camp, climbing through the ice fall provides access to the Western Cwm where camps 1 & 2 are situated. As our intention was to “get to know” the ice fall before a late breakfast we left at a luxurious 6am and went part way before returning to camp. Upon entering this frozen labyrinth you hear creaks and groans and running water underneath your feet, all generated by the pressure of ice, ever so slowly stacking up then cracking and collapsing into the valley. Navigating this world requires ropes, ladders, an alert mind and hard work as it rises steeply. Each year a group of Sherpas called the Ice Fall Doctors establish and maintain the route with skill and bravery well beyond most people in EBC. While It is mesmerizingly beautiful, as you pass through it is prudent to sneak a glance, give the power of nature a nod of recognition and keep moving.
